Nel 1998 Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) è allapice della fama: autore di un lm di successo che gli è valso lOscar, sposato con una bellissima moglie, un glio, un grande senso dellumorismo e un fascino magnetico. Quindici anni dopo Keith, sulla soglia dei 50, non scrive da tempo, è divorziato, sullorlo del lastrico. Per guadagnare qualcosa si trasferisce per tenere un corso di sceneggiatura in ununiversità fuori New York, con lidea di insegnare e di sedurre qualche giovane studentessa.
